Does Etsy Collect Sales Tax for Sellers? (2026 Guide)

August 7, 2026 · 6 min read

Short answer: yes. In 2026, Etsy automatically calculates, collects, and remits US sales tax on your behalf for orders placed through the marketplace — and it does the same for VAT and GST in a long list of countries. For most sellers that means you do not set up tax rates or file sales tax on your Etsy orders yourself. But "Etsy handles it" hides two things that quietly affect your real numbers, and it's worth knowing exactly where the line is.

What Etsy collects automatically (US)

Etsy is a marketplace facilitator, which by law makes it responsible for collecting and remitting sales tax in states that have those rules. As of 2026 that's every US state with a statewide sales tax, plus Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico — around 45 states and territories. When a buyer checks out, Etsy calculates the correct tax from the buyer's location, adds it at checkout, collects it, and sends it to the tax authority. You don't touch it, and you don't need to set up state tax rates in your shop for orders Etsy covers.

What Etsy collects automatically (international)

Outside the US, Etsy also collects and remits a lot of tax for you:

This is genuinely helpful: it's compliance work you'd otherwise have to do yourself.

The catch #1: collected tax still passes through your account

Here's the part that confuses sellers. Even though Etsy sends the sales tax straight to the government, on many orders that tax amount still appears to flow through your payment account — it shows up in your order totals and, crucially, in the gross figure Etsy reports on your 1099-K. So your gross sales number looks bigger than the money you actually keep, because it includes tax you never earned and never kept. If you file taxes off that gross number without backing the sales tax out, you can overstate your income. This is exactly the kind of silent distortion that makes "what did I actually make?" so hard to answer from Etsy's raw totals. (More on the income side in do you have to pay taxes on Etsy income.)

The catch #2: Etsy only covers Etsy orders

Etsy's collection applies to sales made through Etsy. Any other channel is your responsibility: your own Shopify or website store, wholesale to retailers, and in-person sales at craft fairs or markets are not covered by Etsy's marketplace collection. And some states still expect sellers to file a return that reports marketplace-facilitated sales even when the tax was already remitted — often a "zero return." None of this is tax advice, and the rules vary by state and country, so check with an accountant for your situation.

Is the collected tax part of Etsy's fees?

Separately, a lot of sellers ask whether Etsy charges its fees on the sales tax it collects. That's a different question with a real answer — and it does affect your fee total. We cover it in does Etsy charge fees on sales tax.

See your real numbers, tax stripped out

You can sanity-check the fees on any order with our free Etsy fee calculator. But calculators work from published rates — they can't separate the sales tax Etsy collected and remitted from the money you actually earned on each order. That's what Seller Profit Lens does: it connects to your shop read-only, reads what Etsy actually recorded on every order to the cent, strips out pass-through tax, ties fees and costs to the right product, and reconciles the total back to Etsy so your income figure reflects what you truly kept — not an inflated gross.
