It's one of the most common frustrations for Etsy sellers: the numbers on your dashboard look healthy, but the money that actually reaches your bank is noticeably smaller. You're not doing anything wrong — several things quietly reduce your payout between a sale and your bank deposit.
1. Etsy fees come out first
Transaction, payment processing, listing renewal and any Offsite Ads fees are deducted before you're paid. On their own these are often 10–15% of the sale.
2. Refunds and partial refunds
A refund reverses the sale amount and adjusts the associated fees — but the timing can make your payout look off if the refund and the original sale land in different payout periods.
3. Sales tax and VAT you never keep
Etsy collects sales tax / VAT from the buyer and remits it directly. That money passes through your order total but was never yours — so counting it as "sales" makes your payout look smaller by comparison.
4. Currency conversion (international sellers)
If you list and get paid in different currencies, a 2.5% conversion fee applies — and the exchange rate itself shaves a little more.
5. VAT charged on the fees themselves
In many countries Etsy adds VAT on top of its fees. This never appears on a fee calculator — only in your actual payment ledger.
6. Deposits and reserves
New shops or certain regions can have a portion of funds held temporarily as a reserve, which delays (not reduces) part of your payout.
7. Your own costs aren't even in the picture yet
None of the above counts materials, packaging, or the shipping you actually paid. Your "profit" is smaller than your payout, which is already smaller than your sales.
How to see exactly where it goes
The only way to stop guessing is to read the real charges from your own records and break them down per product. That's what Seller Profit Lens does — it connects to your shop (read-only), shows the exact fees Etsy took, subtracts your costs, and reconciles to the cent so the numbers always match Etsy's own.
